Otaku Evolution Episode 131 - Ronin Warriors (Part 1)

The 2019 season of Otaku Evolution has started! I'm sure all four of you who watch these videos are jazzed about it. Just as I'm sure you're psyched to see one of my patented long introduction sequences wherein I'm just screwing around with the sprites. Nevermind the blatantly stupid perspective on that meeting room (it's worse if you look at the whole thing), I had this idea of a grief counseling scene where I would stumble in and just be really oblivious to everyone there in favor of the snacks. And yes, that was a dodgy attempt at a German accent for Herr Doktor.

Otaku Evolution Episode 130 - Year End English Dub Review V

I know nobody gives a crap about my dumb sprite padding material, most especially because if you hadn't ever read my comic strips, there's about zero context, and you can't even read them anymore, except the sparse amount I put up on my DeviantArt gallery. The whole "storyline" bullshit? It's for me. It's basically just for me to work out story ideas I had that I never got to in my strips. Hopefully it provides some kind of atmosphere, regardless of context. But that aside, while I am committed to doing *less* of it in 2019, you'll still see it. It's not like I get any more or less views in videos that have it.

Otaku Evolution Episode 129 - Sailor Moon S: The Movie

This year's Christmas episode, subtitled A Hastily Prepared Otaku Evolution Christmas, is well-named, because I didn't get the chance to do a lot of the wrap-around atmosphere-setting like in the past years. The best I could do was the usual zoom into Penguinopolis. But I did create a whole new background, a comfy, Christmas-tinged setting from which to anchor my sprite avatar between clips, and I'm deeply satisfied with how it turned out. Yeah, I probably could have gone through the trouble of animating the fire in the fireplace, but it's such a small detail (just pretend it was a fake fire, a light bulb shaped like a fire for the set... besides which, Penguinopolis probably wouldn't have chimneys) and if you're eagle-eyed, you'll notice how appropriate that painting is for the decor.

Otaku Evolution Episode 128 - Redline

As the year starts to wind down, I wanted to do a quick and easy review, so that means covering the Takeshi Koike visual feast that is Redline!

So... yeah, that's all I need to say. It's fucking Redline, folks. Wacky Races to the nth degree.

Otaku Evolution Episode 125 - Hellsing Ultimate (OVA)

It's time again for my annual Halloween video! This time I took a page out of my first year's Halloween fare, Hellsing, with a review of Hellsing Ultimate, the 10-episode more-accurate-to-the-manga adaptation of Kouta Hirano's manga. It's big, it's loud, it's kind of silly, but it's oh so compelling, a monster mash with an operatic flair. So pour a bowl of mini Kit Kats, open a pumpkin beer, and let's watch an OP mega-vampire fight Nazis! Hey, if you're going to be a denizen of a undead horde, don't also be a bigot!

Happy Halloween!

Otaku Evolution Episode 122 - Sol Bianca

It's time once again for Action Channel Month,  and this year's first subject is the two episode OVA, Sol Bianca, from the early 90s. It features a crew of female space pirates, an orbital sniper rifle, a human trophy room, a BGM track used in wrestling, and perhaps the coolest ship in anime. I don't know what's weirder, though, that it never had any more episodes after the second, or that ADV didn't even bother dubbing the second. It's a fun little romp, regardless, and I've been meaning to cover it for a while.

Otaku Evolution Episode 121 - Case Closed: Captured in Her Eyes

Fuck TMS. Seriously. They've flagged this a several times already and I've had to re-edit and upload to see if I can beat the algorithm. They're being more draconian than with Lupin videos. They're just REVIEW VIDEOS! If this keeps up, I'll have to move the video to Dailymotion or Bitchute or whatever. Otherwise the review will be about four minutes long and just have static screencaps, making it all the more the glorified slideshows my videos usually are.

Anyway, Case Closed (Detective Conan): Captured in Her Eyes is pretty standard Conan fare, not being especially stand out, but being pretty decent. It still has a number of flaws, though, and I'm more than willing and able to nitpick this thing for chuckles.

Otaku Evolution Episode 120 - Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory

Time to exorcise another evil spirit from my anime fandom and shove Gundam 0083 in the wood chipper where it belongs. Sure, it's pretty, but it's also as dumb as a sack of knobs. It's quite possibly the worst entry into the Universal Century timeline in terms of characters and plot. The characters? Most of them are insufferable. The plot? Goes further than it needs to. Maybe it's best to watch this by fast forwarding through most of the dialogue to the action bits. Or, you know, watch War in the Pocket or 08th MS Team instead.

Kou and Nina are just... I have a real life, palpable hatred for these fictional characters.

ThunderCats 2011 Episodes 23 – 26 [FINAL]– Purr-emature Purr-manent Demise

I gotta end this watchthrough with a rotten pun. Sorry.

So after skipping a week so I could watch some OG Dragonball (a decision I do NOT regret), it's time to cover these final few episodes. Long story short, they're good but so good it really hurts when one realizes that after the final scene, it is all we've got. Short story long? Well... let's see what interested me about this.

Otaku Evolution Episode 119 - Cowboy Bebop

Hm, maybe I should have timed this better so it could be the 120th episode. 20th anniversary of the show, 120th episode, get it? Well, whatever, 119 will have to do.

Cowboy Bebop is an unvarnished work of genius, an exquisite blending of genres set to a multitude of rhythms. It's not defined by its genres, though, but by ingenuity in execution and emotional gravity. There's plenty of other reasons why it remains my favorite anime after so long.  So for my 35th birthday (what the fuck am I doing with my life?), I've decided to review this eternal classic of Japanese animation.

3, 2, 1... let's jam!
