Dragon Ball Kai - Episode 20 Review

Episode 20, "Rebellion Against Freeza! Vegeta, Burning With Ambition", or "With a Twist of Kiwi"

*****SPOILERS*****

Synopsis: On Namek, Freeza and his men menace and kill natives, and have already collected four Dragon Balls. Two of Freeza's men come upon Kami's spaceship and damage it. Gohan and Kuririn take them out easily, but Bulma is devestated. Vegeta and Kiwi engaged in battle, where Kiwi demonstrates his power, confident he's stronger than his opponent. However, Vegeta shows that his power has grown dramatically since being on Earth. Kiwi tries to reason with him, but Vegeta won't have it, and kills Kiwi as he attempts an escape. Back at the Namekian village, Dodoria and Zarbon are stunned by Vegeta's power, which they've been reading with their scouters (Zarbon's explodes), but Freeza remains unimpressed. Gohan, Kuririn, and Bulma find a cave to stay in. Kuririn and Gohan detect Freeza and his men as they pass by with the Dragon Balls. Back on Earth, Goku is given news about what's going on on Namek from Roshi, and is given senzu beans by Yajirobe, which he eats, and recovers.

Comments:

I'm actually beginning to notice some of the redrawn shots, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. If it starts to have the effect of the Zeta Gundam movies, it will be quite annoying. Is Toei telling me that they couldn't afford to reanimate DBZ, or are they just too cheap?

Quite a bit actually happens here, or at least it took a while to describe it all. First, we have the first run-in between the Earth group and Freeza's men. Those two guys turn out to be nobodies, though, since Gohan and Kuririn take them out for fun. Of course, the two of them probably could have stopped the henchmen before the ship was damaged, but hey, we can't have DBZ characters acting with reason, now can we?

Then we have Vegeta's short battle with Kiwi (yes, I know that in the dub, it was pronounced "Kewi", but I wanted to be sure you got the name pun!). This is definitely one of the things I remember from this arc, since it showed Vegeta clearly killing somebody, even in the Funimation/Ocean version that aired in syndication. That, and I remember Brian Drummond's performance being pretty good during this bit. Kiwi didn't really stand a chance, poor guy

The second half of the episode is really just everyone reacting to something, until we get to Earth and Goku's recovery via senzu beans. Yajirobe has gone from eater of demons to mere deliverer of senzu, the poor fat bastard. I'd have liked to seen him go to Namek, maybe eat some of Freeza's men. Guldo, perhaps. Dodoria looks like he's got a lot of meat on him, too. Probably good with some Worcestershire sauce. Delicious.

Oh, where was I? Er, at the end! Yep, at the end. See you next review! (Mmm, Dodoria.)

Overall Score:

3.5 out of 5 (for the Kiwi fight)
