Dragon Ball Kai - Episode 46 Review

Episode 46, "This is the Last Trump Card! Goku's Extra-Large Genki-dama"

"Fuck you, I refuse to believe Linda Young is returning as me in the dub!"Raise the roof, Goku!

*****SPOILERS*****

Synopsis: Low on strength, Goku is unable to put up any further a fight against Freeza, who toys with him. Gohan wants to help his father, but Piccolo advises against it, as Goku is about to do something. Goku raises his hands to the sky, confusing Freeza, but Kuririn realizes what he's about to do: create a Genki Dama! Goku uses power from Namek and surrounding planets, while Freeza is unable to figure out what he's doing. A huge Genki Dama forms in the sky, far bigger than the one Goku made on Earth. Freeza attacks Goku, who continues forming it. Piccolo has Gohan and Kuririn lend him some of their ki so he can distract Freeza long enough for Goku to finish the Genki Dama. Freeza finally sees the Genki Dama and plans to finish Goku off before it's finished, but Piccolo interrupts. Piccolo tries to hold Freeza off, but nothing he does appears to work. Freeza decides he will kill Piccolo first.

A moment later, Gohan transformed into Oozaru. "With our power combined..."

Comments:

Unsuccessful in fighting Freeza, Goku has finally decided to pull out his trump card, the Genki Dama. And while it didn't work so well against Vegeta, I guess he thought, "Hey, maybe if it's a really big one, it'll work on Freeza!" Tell me how that works out for you, bud. In fact, I'll have Kuririn tell me how well it works out, amirite? Oh ho ho. Anyway, I love the Genki Dama, even though it hardly ever works (except in movies). I like the idea of borrowing the energy of others so that it sort of becomes everybody's victory. Of course, here, Goku is just taking energy from grass, trees, water, and little critters.

Come to think of it, I'm a little confused. Where did the ki come from for the Genki Dama on Earth? When Kuririn is holding it, we see a vision of people on Earth, but we never saw any of them lend their energy. Does this mean that their energy was just taken without them knowing it or did somebody ask for it without the viewer knowing? Then later in the Buu arc, people volunteer to lend their energy. Could they have just taken their energy even if they didn't allow it? And if you can take energy from others without their consent, why not take energy from Freeza? I guess I'm trying to make too much sense out of DBZ.

You got to love how dense Freeza is. I mean, this huge ass ki ball is forming in the sky, and he doesn't notice it until he sees its reflection on the water. I guess it's because he can't detect ki. He's the most powerful force in the galaxy and he can't detect ki. Yet somehow Vegeta managed to pick that skill up. Can't Freeza? I guess learning new tricks is something Freeza would think is unnecessary, or maybe in the heat of battle, it's hard to pick up a skill like that, since Vegeta didn't really learn to hone in on ki that well until midway in this arc.

Next episode has that scene. You know the one.

A moment later, Goku transformed into Oozaru.

3 out of 5
