Dragon Ball Daima - Episode 3 Review

Episode 3, "Daima"

Goku is astonishedGoku getting air

*****SPOILERS*****

Synopsis: Glorio's ship passes through the barrier to the Demon Realm, landing in the Third Demon World, where he's from. Goku notices that the air, which is thick with smoke from volcanoes, makes his movements more sluggish. Glorio, Goku, and Kaioshin rent a room in a town, then proceed to a bar where Goku eats. The group are attacked while they eat, but Glorio and Goku easily repel their attackers. The next day, however, they discover Glorio's ship has been stolen.

Comments:

We finally get an episode that truly feels like a Dragon Ball adventure series and not just an extension of Z!

Lil' Goku is such a little stinker. Quite literally, in the case of this episode. I love his reaction to Lord Warp. He really can't help himself, he's got no tact at all. I also like his fascination with the Demon Realm and desire to land to get some fresh (but stinky) air. Finally, we see his priorities when he fights as he eats (two of his favorite activities). They really turned up the charm on Goku in this series, and it helps that Masako Nozawa brings it out so well.

The Demon Realm is interesting. First you have to pass through Lord Warp, then you have to pick a hatch to one of the Demon Worlds, which you need special permission to enter. There's a tunnel path between worlds, but there's a barrier there keeping individuals from using it. There's a giant statue of Dabura (that seems to be in slight disrepair), the previous king, who we previously saw being turned into a cookie by Majin Buu. And there's the Sea of Darkness, a place you do not want to fall into (something tells me that somebody will).

The denizens of the Third Demon World are a varied bunch, too. The bar the trio stepped into looked like the cantina from Star Wars. One guy looked like a wolf man, another looked like a fat dinosaur man or dragon, whereas yet another looked like a big salamander or something, with a cape and a giant axe (which gets stuck in the ground).

Glorio is native to the Third Demon World, and you can see he has kind of a complex about it underneath his calm demeanor. He mentions that Kaioshin is of the Glind race, native to the Second Demon World, who are considered more sophisticated. He also seems to treat his fellow Third Demon World people harshly. Maybe working in the First Demon World got him a taste of the good life and he resents going back to the Third? I sense something a little off about him. I wonder what it is.

This episode's action sequence was pretty good. I loved watching Goku fighting as he chomps down on his Demon Realm burgers (don't ask what they're made of), using his surroundings, multitasking, and flipping around, having fun. Glorio had a bit of fight in him, too. It's too bad the barflies were poor losers and have now stolen Glorio's ship.

It looks like Goku will be seeing more action in the next episode, with the Nyoibo! Neat.
