Dragon Ball Daima - Episode 6 Review

Episode 6, "Lightning"

Panzy talking to Kaioshin and GokuGomah's men are arriving

*****SPOILERS*****

Synopsis: After a sudden landing in the desert, the group jettisons some of the packed material to lighten the load for the plane. Gomah's soldiers appear and question Glorio, Kaioshin, and Panzy when Goku is out of sight. Satisfied with their answers, they take off. At night, the party decides to camp in a cave, but are attacked by a raging minotaur. Goku and Glorio debate over who's strongest, and thus capable of taking on the monster. This leads to a sparring match to decide who is strongest, in which Glorio utilizes lightning magic. Goku, however, after transforming into a Super Saiyan, is easily able to counter his power and win the match. The minotaur escapes back into the cave. Back on Earth, Bulma finishes her work on the ship, but when Vegeta, Kibito, and Piccolo take off, it malfunctions.

Comments:

The pacing is a bit slow in Daima, but I like the world building it's doing.

I forgot to notice last week, but the king absolutely had one of those control collars the villagers (and Panzy) have. So King Gomah's men have authority even over the king and his men. If I were those soldiers, I'd have been more suspicious of Kaioshin and Glorio. But maybe they don't get paid enough to care about travelers to the Third Demon World. And after all, Goku wasn't in sight (he was busy pooping!), and the people they were questioning were all at least somewhat majin.

Kaioshin reveals some interesting insights into his people, the Glind. For one, they're all grown from trees, rather than being born as most people would. I think this was already established in Dragon Ball canon, that Kaioshins (and Kaios) were born of trees. I guess most of the gods in the DB universe are Glind? The second revelation is that, technically, Glind are without gender. I guess Dr. Arinsu must've did some experiments on them to make them seem more female. So does that make Arinsu trans, or...? Whatever.

The minotaur bit was pretty funny and reminded me of Oolong (though he would have been only pretending to be a minotaur). The humor is not so different here. The minotaur is probably legitimately strong, but it's just nothing compared to the strength of Goku or Glorio, so while different circumstances, the punchline is the same: the minotaur is flexing while being way out of his depth. I love the part where he realizes he's being ignored in favor of Goku and Glorio's bout. Between this and Goku's behavior (his lack of hygiene, his need to poop), Daima has plenty to laugh about, however juvenile it may be.

The real centerpiece to this episode is obviously Goku's fight with Glorio. It's incredibly well animated and pretty exciting. I wondered how strong Glorio was, and his ability to shoot lightning from his hands is certainly formidable. He should be a great asset to the team should they run into any real danger. But even in his child form, you can't count out Son Goku, because as long as he can at least transform into a Super Saiyan (I wonder if he can go into the other SS forms), he's more than a match for Glorio. In fact, Goku remains solidly confident throughout the entire fight, actually kind of smug on top of it. Him stopping the lightning bolt with a single hand was amazing, if not entiirely surprising. We are talking about Goku here. I hope Goku's fight with the Tamagamis are at LEAST as cool as this was.

We get a little bit of Bulma and the gang back at the ranch, so to speak, at the end of the episode. Despite Bulma's expertise in fixing and constructing things, something has gone wrong in the repairs of Kaioshin's ship. I guess they're going to need Hybis.

Glorio Watch: We see that Glorio has been in contact with Dr. Arinsu this entire time, and whatever he's doing, it's playing right into her plans. I knew we couldn't trust Glorio! But maybe he's playing her as much as she's playing him.

Another excellent episode. Looking forward to next week, as usual.
