Dragon Ball Z Kai- Episode 07 Review

Episode 7, "Battle with 10-Fold Gravity! Goku, Your Training is a Footrace"

*****SPOILERS*****

Synopsis: Goku, wearing his weighted clothing, chases Bubbles across Kaio-sama's planet, eventually catching him. Meanwhile, Piccolo trains Gohan in battle. Kururin, Tenshinhan, Chouzu, Yamcha, and Yajirobe continue to train at Kami's palace. Back at Kaio's planet, Kaio gives Goku a new test: to hit his grasshopper friend Gregory with a heavy mallet. Goku manages to complete this task, prompting Kaio to begin Goku's real training.

Comments:

I'm amazed at how far the show has gone already. In just seven episodes, they covered Raditz, Goku on Snake Way, Gohan in the wilderness, and Goku's tests with Bubbles and Gregory. In the next episode, Vegeta and Nappa arrive on Earth! Jeez. That's a lot of coverage in such a short little space. I suppose, in a way, it sort of marginalizes Goku's accomplishment of running Snake Way, since in the original run he went on two side adventures, while Gohan was going on little adventures of his own, like his father as a child. Here, they just cut through all that. But with the animation touched up, I sort of want to get to the real meat of this arc as soon as possible, so perhaps it's not so bad after all.

By the way, I love Goku's tests chasing Bubbles and Gregory around. Just the way Goku uses the small little Kaio planet to his advantage shows that even though he's usually simple-minded, he can actually be quite clever at times. All the while, Goku is showing absolutely no deference or awe to Kaio-sama, which is just like him. Goku has no tact, even when meeting a god, he forgets to be formal. Then again, when the god training you is a chubby catfish man who lives for bad puns and his only friends are a monkey and a grasshopper, you'd probably also have difficulty feeling inspired.

The music continues to be disasterous. Shunsuke Kikuchi's original soundtrack is missed. Also, there are so many moments where it would be better if there weren't any music at all, which is what was good about the original DBZ. These generic guitar riffs playing during the training of the B and C players of the show are as worthless and irritating as they are (sorry, Kururin).

Vegeta and Nappa! They're coming! Awesumo. I can hardly wait for the next episode.

Overall Score:

3.5 out of 5 (because of Bubbles and Gregory)
