Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Episode 39 ENGLISH DUB Review

Episode 39, "Daydream"

"Are you happy and you know it, Kimbley? ARE YOU HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT?!"

Synopsis: Edward prevents Kimbley from going at Scar, who has Winry captive. In a flashback, Winry confronts Scar about his killing her parents and he tells her he has the right to kill her. Instead, she bandages a bleeding wound of his, and while she says she won't forgive him, she does it because it's a life her parents saved. Scar asks Miles why he works for a country that hates him, and he says it's to change their attitude towards Ishbalans from within. After much discussion, the group come up with a plan to get Winry out of the clutches of the homunculi and Central by faking a kidnapping by Scar, who agrees to cooperate. Winry, Yoki, the chimera (who desire to get their original bodies back), Marcoh, Mei, and Scar seperate from the Elrics and Miles. In the present, Miles discovers that the Briggs base has been taken over by Central soldiers. Alphonse goes out to inform them, but in the snow storm, sees a vision of his body and is concerned about his future.

Comments:

I don't want to appear overly harsh on Caitlin Glass. She's not as shrill and overbearing as she was when she played Winry in the first television series. However, I just don't get the kind of earnest emotional performance from her that I'd like. I'm glad that she's improved, but I'm just not that moved by her scene with Scar. Then again, I've been known to be biased against the character herself. I wish they could have somehow combined this scene with the one episodes ago where she had a gun on him.

I still think the chimeras sound a little generic, but the episode compensated with Maxey Whitehead's Alphonse pleading with them not to give up. She did a really excellent job conveying Al's desire to return to normal. Whitehead probably did the best job in this episode, and she's clearly every bit as good an Al that Aaron Dismuke was.

J. Michael Tatum's Scar can be rather good when he tries. But it alway sounds a little too... shall I say, apologetic? He always sounds a bit lacking in oomph. He should sound a little more intimidating, even in his present condiiton, captured and at others' mercy.

Everyone else does their usual level of performing. The Marcoh voice for this series is really grating.
