Episode 51, "Immortal Army"

*****SPOILERS*****
Synopsis: The officer who activates the homunculi dolls is eaten by them, and they turn o the scientist that was with him next. Edward, Scar, and the chimera arrive at the doorway near where Barry died. Ed tries to open it, to no avail. Suddenly it opens and the homunculi dolls pour in. Olivier takes a general hostage, but he orders his subordinates to shut the gates so that Mustang's and the Briggs forces can't get in. Sloth attacks, but Olivier moves out of the way and the general is crushed instead. Edward's group tries to fight off the dolls, but they don't have any luck. Edward suddenly realizes what they are. He shuts the exit to the room so they can prevent them from escaping. Back at the mound, Heinkel realizes that Pride has been sending out morse code signal, but it's too late. Kimbley attacks, breaking the mound, which releases Pride. Underground, Mei runs from the dolls, balancing the jar with Envy on her head, but Envy is swallowed by one of the dolls and takes control of it. Devouring the other dolls, Envy returns to his original form. Olivier tries to fight Sloth, but isn't damaging him. When she is about to be crushed, her brother Alex arrives to assist her. Alphonse tries to help Heinkel and escape from Pride and Kimbley, who shows him the Philosopher's Stone he saved from the mine. Alphonse uses it to challenge Kimbley and Pride, to Kimbley's amusement.
Comments:
Envy returns to form in this episode, meaning more of Wendy Powell's grainy, pained sounding voice for him. Well, actually, Powell's Envy wasn't that bad in this episode. In fact, I quite enjoyed her delivery when Envy returned to his usual form and thanked May for it. The dialogue was well read and fit the mouth flaps perfectly. This is probably as positive as I'm ever going to be about Powell's Envy, which I've never been fond of.
I still think it's stupid that they brought Envy back into the mix. His defeat at the hands of Doctor Marcoh was a great way to have him meet his end, by the hands of one of the lowly humans he'd been taunting for so long.
Stephanie Young's Olivier is still strong in this episode as she begins her fight against humungous Sloth. I guess Sloth sounds as he should, big, slow, and tired. Eric Vale's Kimbley still seems a bit too scratchy for my liking. The delivery is decent enough, he sells the lines most of the time, but as for his voice, it's iffy. Maxey Whitehead'sr Alphonse was solid, geniunely sounding concerned for Heinkel's well being. The VA for Heinkel even did a decent job.
All in all, not a lot to say about the performances, because they seem to be good, overall.
Overall ENGLISH DUB Score:
4 out of 5

Ehh, I think his death in
Ehh, I think his death in episode 54 is a bit more conclusive. He's the victim of the revenge of Mustang, the friend of the man Envy killed. We also realize how Envy really feels about humans deep down. Eps 53 and 54 are pretty touching episodes.
If Marcoh destroyed Envy for
If Marcoh destroyed Envy for good then that would be of been the worst writing of the entire series.thank goodness Hiromu Arakawa knows how to write a masterfully told story.Envy is a vastly important villain to the entire story.Envy coming back for the final battle with Mustang was common sense and their is nothing stupid about it.episodes 53 and episode 54 are emotional powerhouses in both the english and japanese dub.two of the finest episodes outside of the entire series right up there with Death of the Undying and He Who would swallow God.The voice actor who played Heinkel is named Bradley Campbell and he did an excellent job during this episode far better then simply being decent.out of all the Chimeras Heinkel was my favorite mainly because of Campbell's strong performance in this episode and he truly shines in the next episode when he crushes one of the main villain's windpipe.I've never had a problem with Wendy's performance as Envy in the first series or Brotherhood.I've always enjoyed her take on envy and she gives the performance of her voice acting career in envy's final episodes come to think of it quite a few voice actors give the best performances of their voice acting career in the final set of episodes two that come to mind are Ed Blaylock and Kent Williams who are truly underrated voice actors who deserve all the praise in the world for their compelling takes on such beloved characters anyways look forward to the next review.
Ah yes I agree with the other
Ah yes I agree with the other two previous comments Envy's death was handled very well.Hiromu Arakawa made us feel sadness for such a villain that caused nothing but chaos and hell through the entire scope of the story when you get down to facts Envy's ruthless actions caused more pain and suffering for all of the Protagonists then any other villain in the story.Hiromu Arakawa has a beautiful way of writing her characters that's why she is among my favorite mangakas of all time right up their with Tite Kubo & Akira Toriyama. If I remember correctly Penguin Truth you were never fond of Blaylock's Wrath but I think even you will have to admire his performance in Wrath's final fight with Scar..the way he changes his voice when he is in the heat of battle is brilliant and makes me wish he got more voice roles.
Eh.
I'm one of the few people who absolutely hated Envy's death. It felt... forced? I dunno, I just hate when they try to make some villain "sympathetic" by giving him a BAWW-ful death. His was especially frustrating because it felt like they were trying to FORCE you to feel even a little bit sorry for him. Sorry Arakawa, it had the exact opposite effect. That's just me though.
I actually like Wendy Powell's Envy. I can't quite get WHY I do either. I guess it's so... different from anything I've heard. It's so bad it's good? I also like Eric Vale, but I don't like his Kimblee. It never fits and just feels awkward. Thankfully, I don't like Kimblee's character either.
I am curious to know if
I am curious to know if you've watched the entire series in english form and are just slowly reviewing an episode here and there or are you still catching up on the english dub of the series?
What are your favorite tracks from Akira Senju's masterful score?
I'm not sure if you done it
I'm not sure if you done it on purpose or not but you misspelled the word homunculus.
This is random what I'm about to ask but do you ever watch a television show called Breaking Bad?
More dub reviews of
More dub reviews of Brotherhood would be lovely. 8)
