Otaku Evolution Episode 163 - Black Jack OVA (Episodes 5-6)

I have to be honest. I don't really care for this crop of Black Jack episodes.  There are too many unnecessary moving parts in them that prevented them from being good. At least the "Owl of San Merida" had an interesting premise with the disappearing bullet holes, but adding the drama of the civil war and the old man just felt too extra. The sixth episode was a big waste of time, with a giant middle finger as an ending. I miss drug cacti.

Otaku Evolution Episode 141 - Crusher Joe: The Ultimate Weapon: Ash

It's the finale of 80s Month this year! So yeah, this one's just a "summarize and snark" kind of video, not a lot of deep diving, because it's Crusher Joe, so there's no deep diving to do. It's just a light, fun adventure wrapped up in about an hour. Really, I think there should have been a Crusher Joe TV series with stuff like this. There's revivals of all sorts of anime properties nowadays, so perhaps this one is due for a new entry.

Speaking of new entries (or old ones), I padded the video a bit with the return of Terry and a few hints for what's to come with what I still loosely consider a "storyline" but is just me playing with sprites for shits and giggles with no special goal.

Enjoy!

Otaku Evolution Episode 114 - Giant Robo (OVA)

Ah, Giant Robo. Best anime I've reviewed so far this year. This classic 7-episode OVA, directed by Yasuhiro Imagawa, combines classic Chinese wuxia, Western retro-future, and good ol' mecha action to give us a celebration of Mitsuteru Yokoyama's work. It's a real stunner, folks. It has exciting action, gripping drama, splendid art/animation, fantastic music and sound design, and is even greater than the sum of its parts. Imagawa is criminally underrated and we're all lucky to have him in the industry. So join me in this look at one of my favorite anime of all time, Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still!

Otaku Evolution Episode 112 - Crusher Joe: The Ice Prison

For whatever reason, it took me a lot longer to make this twelve minute long review video than it really should have. Partly because I don't really feel like my videos are even appreciated, but also I was sick and I went days barely working on it. But here you go, anyway, my review of the first Crusher Joe OVA feature, The Ice Prison, which is just the right amount of Crusher Joe and just the quality I was looking for: exciting and brief.

Maybe I'm just trying to delay my next video subject... ugh.

Otaku Evolution Episode 99 - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA (1993)

It's time to finish the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVAs with the one made before the first part of the story! Y-yeah, that's a thing. 1993's OVA picks up where 2000's left off, so I guess they wanted to get to the more interesting portion of the story first when they made this. I dunno, folks, I'd say the giant orangutan whose Stand power was a whole ship and the guy who hopped into reflections was pretty damn interesting already. But this part has Dargy... I mean, Dooley. No, that isn't it. What's his name again? Doggie? Well, it does have A doggie, at least.

Otaku Evolution Episode 93 - Black Jack (OVA) (Episodes 1-2)

Dezaki Month continues with the first two episodes of an anime OVA that pits Tezuka's mysterious black-garbed unlicensed surgeon against a strange disease that dessicates and the latest drug epidemic: wacky cacty (cacti)! All the while he exposes a young girl made out of a teratoma to the gruesome disfigurements of his patients or keeps her trapped in a cabin. Huh, that really paints this as a different kind of anime, doesn't it? Black Jack isn't some creep, but that doesn't stop a wide range of ladies from throwing themselves at him. And he gives them the D... octoring.

Otaku Evolution Episode 75 - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA (2000)

In this episode of my barely-watched anime review video series, I take a look at the 2000 OVA of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, which adapts Part III of the larger metaseries, Stardust Crusaders. Though oddly enough, only the first half, since the second half was animated in 1993. Yeah, so I'm reviewing in chronological order of the storyline, rather than the production order here. But what are these flashes of memories I'm getting about my first meeting with Pen Pen? Something tells me there's a need for a TO BE CONTINUED...

Otaku Evolution Episode 70 - Heroic Legend of Arslan (OVA) (Episodes 3-4)

Ugh. Do you know how many times I had to tweak "Adagio for Strings" so it wouldn't be flagged by YouTube? Three times. I guess that specific performance was licensed. Don't forget folks, that despite classical music being largely public domain, the people who actually perform it tend to have contracts and copyrights and such. I only needed a few seconds, though, FFS.

Anyway, enjoy my second look into the OVAs for The Heroic Legend of Arslan, based on the books by the dude who made Legend of the Galactic Heroes! Surely it is just as good, though, right? Riiiight? (No.)

In this episode of Otaku Evolution, I take a look at the scarred swordsman cutting his way through the Bakumatsu with a bloodied blade, Kenshin Himura, before he became a technical pacifist. Here's to the heart of the sword!
