Otaku Evolution Episode 73 – Macross Plus

I’ve really painted myself into a corner this year with Otaku Evolution, covering so many of my favorite anime (like this one), there’s not a whole lot of the best I can review (or at least not a whole lot I can monetize reviews for). But nevertheless, it was great revisiting Macross Plus and confirming that not only does it completely hold up, but it’s still one of the best mecha anime. But what else could it be with that pedigree? Shinichiro Watanabe, Keiko Nobumoto, Ichiro Itano, Yoko Kanno, and for the English dub, Bryan Cranston! Few other anime could satisfy my need for great anime to review for this year’s Action Channel Month quite like this! It’s so crazy good, you’ll hear “Voices”! read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 72 – Appleseed (Movie)

It’s the return of Action Channel Month, here on Otaku Evolution, with a review of the first Appleseed movie! Does this CG film based off the manga by Shirow Masamune hold up after all these years? Well… it doesn’t look any worse than the latest Berserk stuff. Man, can they ever get Berserk right in animation? FFS. But back to Appleseed, join me as I take a look at a movie that has zero reason to exist aside from visual spectacle! Well, that’s actually the only reason any Appleseed productions exist now. Just sit back and relax while I throw sarcastic barbs and mildly clever quips at this showcase piece that nobody cares about. So, the usual!  read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 71 – Arcade Gamer Fubuki

Stack those quarters up and grab a slice, because we’re gonna get the controls greasy and play… er, I mean watch, a little ecchi comedy called Arcade Gamer Fubuki, about a girl whose panties give her the ability to GIT GUD. Japan, you’re so forward-thinking, a girl gamer who doesn’t mind showing off the goods. Empowered by her underwear, literally! Progress marches ever onward. Also, for some reason, she’s friends with Excel from Excel Saga (or, at least a character played by her). read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 70 – Heroic Legend of Arslan (OVA) (Episodes 3-4)

Ugh. Do you know how many times I had to tweak “Adagio for Strings” so it wouldn’t be flagged by YouTube? Three times. I guess that specific performance was licensed. Don’t forget folks, that despite classical music being largely public domain, the people who actually perform it tend to have contracts and copyrights and such. I only needed a few seconds, though, FFS.

Anyway, enjoy my second look into the OVAs for The Heroic Legend of Arslan, based on the books by the dude who made Legend of the Galactic Heroes! Surely it is just as good, though, right? Riiiight? (No.) read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 69 – Baccano!

In this special episode for my birthday, I’ve decided to cover a favorite anime of mine (though, I’ve already covered four favorites this year, kind of being easy on myself), Brain Base’s Baccano!, based on a series of Japanese light novels written by Ryohgo Narita. I also did a bunch of difficult production flourishes and animations for this one, so I’d appreciate feedback (read: praise). What happens when a bunch of gangsters, thieves, and psychos vie for control of a train? Well, find out! It’s the show that skips around in time but is always compelling, and I think you’ll be satisfied by what you see. read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 68 – Mid Year English Dub Review II

Can you believe it took me three weeks to make this video? It’s that damn casino opening thing. Honestly, I originally planned for it to be longer, but I made my point, which was atmosphere. In comparison, my commentary on the English dubs of anime I’ve covered this year, is pretty miniscule. But I covered my bases, talking about dub studios like Animaze, Bang Zoom, and Funimation. Who knew that Animaze produced such crummy dubs at one time? Well, I did, but I’m sharing it with you! Also, what is with my penguin pal? Some mighty suspicious doings are afoot! read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 67 – Yu Yu Hakusho: The Golden Seal

I thought I’d dip my toe into the waters of long-running shonen action titles again by taking on a small portion of Yu Yu Hakusho! The episode was originally a little bit longer, and you can probably tell where a few cuts were made, but I have a time limit on my videos now, and it would have looked really pathetic split up into two parts just over a few seconds of content. So here we go! Next time I have a mid-year episode, and I still haven’t even brainstormed ideas for that one. Sorry for falling behind! read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 66 – Spirited Away by elliott-morbell

It’s the 2nd Year Anniversary of Otaku Evolution! (I’m still trying to get people to actually watch it.) In this episode, I’m reviewing Spirited Away, the Academy Award-winning Studio Ghibli film! If you want to see me review more well-known, beloved classics like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Black Lagoon, Trigun, Evangelion, or Giant Robo, I’m going to need your financial support! Otaku Evolution Episode 65 – Mobile Suit Gundam II (Movie) (IN 2 PARTS)

So, about a month ago, I got a full-on copyright strike on my YouTube account for disputing a copyright flagging for a test video for a review I was planning to do on Riding Bean. The company that complained is called Molebeat, a Japanese company that deals with intellectual property. Despite my video being well under Fair Use law (#WTFU), I now have a strike that limits the length of videos I can upload onto YouTube, and thus my splitting this video into two parts. Attempts to contact this “Molebeat” company via e-mail have so far been in vain. I think that a company should have to have their own YT account before they can make copyright complaints, so the person being complained against can easily contact them. read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 64 – Black Magic M-66

Of all the Masumune Shirow adaptations I could pick, why did I choose Black Magic M-66? Because it’s short, it’s quirky, and it’s easy to review? Hm, yeah, probably. But also because I could actually monetize a video about it on YouTube. Be sure to contribute to my Patreon and maybe I’ll review stuff like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
