Martian Successor Nadesico is one of the few anime I’ve purchased on Blu-Ray that I regret. It’s not like it’s one of the worst anime I’ve ever watched, but it’s so mediocre, I can’t imagine ever wanting to revisit it. It’s one of those dime-a-dozen space shows of the 90s that frankly could have been a short OVA and been fine, but they made it into a 26-episode TV series and it just dragged. Not to mention, its ADV English dub is horrendous. Made it a chore to get through.
Violet Evergarden. More like VIOLENT Evergarden, amirite? 80% of the show is touching moments and tragic pitfalls and then, like, 20% of it is people getting shot in the eye or having their arms fall off and hit the ground with the sound of a sandwich hitting the ground. There’s a fight on top of a train, and I haven’t seen that since Baccano. Come for the feels, stay for the keels (kills).
Speaking of the feels, would you consider this series “tragedy porn”? I’ve ventured into this territory before, and I have to say, I think it may be tragedy porn, but I’m willing to hear the opinion of others on the matter. Maybe it’s just straight-up tragic drama and I’m overreacting. But regardless, Violet Evergarden is a pretty solid show.
Episode 18, “Awakening”
*****SPOILERS*****
Synopsis: In his Super Saiyan 3 form, Goku takes on Gomah. At first, he appears to be a match for the large Demon Lord, but ultimately is subdued. Neva, seeing Goku’s trouble, uses his abilities to awaken a new power in Goku. Goku transforms into a different form, which, like Super Saiyan 3, appears to be enough to defeat Gomah, until Gomah unleashes an enormous power that brings Goku back to normal. Arinsu instructs Glorio to summon the dragon from the Dragon Balls to wish her more powerful than Gomah. Glorio summons the dragon and makes a wish in Namekian.
Episode 17, “Gomah”
*****SPOILERS*****
Synopsis: Goku’s group faces down Arinsu’s. The scientist Glind admits that what she wants is to create a more terrifying Demon Realm that the outer worlds would bow to. She suggests they have a fighter from each side take each other on in a bid to decide who will get all the Dragon Balls. Goku and Majin Duu are chosen. The two do battle and Goku finds it difficult to injure his opponent, so he transforms into a Super Saiyan, and the two are more even. However, the two combatants are interrupted by Gomah, who has transformed himself, because of the Third Eye. Gomah creates an arena out of rocks to fight in. Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Kaioshin, and Glorio all attempt to subdue Gomah, with no luck. Upon prodding from Bulma, Arinsu sics Kuu and Duu on Gomah, as well, and Nevah gets Tamagami Number One to go, too. However, even with everybody’s efforts combined, they can’t even scratch the nigh invincible Majin king. Gomah attempts to finish Goku off with a beam, but Tamagami Number One and Majin Duu rush in to block it. Finally, Goku transforms into the third Super Saiyan form to take on Gomah.
Episode 16, “Degesu”
*****SPOILERS*****
Synopsis: Degesu, seeing that Gomah’s defeat is inevitable, visits Dende in the nursery. Vegeta easily takes out Gomah’s Gendarmerie Force. Goku’s group confronts Degesu as he attempts to escape, but he puts a gun to Dende. Glorio and Panzy take down Degesu and rescue Dende. The girl Degesu hired to get the Third Eye belt arrives in Gomah’s throne room. Goku’s group comes to where the Tamagami is and notice that the Dragon Ball has been taken. Arinsu, Kuu, and Duu arrive. Meanwhile, Gomah has trouble removing the Third Eye from the belt, but eventually applies it to his head and transforms.
Episode 15, “Third Eye”
*****SPOILERS*****
Synopsis: King Gomah orders a full-out attack on Goku and his group, using their specialized laser cannons that can even (temporarily) disable the Saiyans and Piccolo. However, they group is able to run off Gomah’s forces and invade Gomah’s fortress. There, they’re met with more resistance from the soldiers. Gomah spots the legendary Third Eye on Hybis’ belt and orders Degesu to retrieve it for him. In the midst of the fighting, Hybis trades away his belt for a hat. When tanks roll out to deal with Goku and the gang, they’re saved by King Kadan and his men, who join in the fight with special armor. The two groups easily defeat Gomah’s men.
Episode 14, “Taboo”
*****SPOILERS*****
Synopsis: King Gomah has his special forces gathered to protect his castle. The quirky group poses for their king, prepared for battle, but doubt that their coming enemies actually defeated Buu and the Tamagamis. Meanwhile, Goku’s group finds that Lord Warp has been shut off, blocking their way to get to the First Demon World. Goku attempts to get through the seal on the bottom of the realm, but can’t. Neva, however, can easily open the seal, having created it to begin with. Glorio flies the group into the tunnel to the First Demon World as Gomah’s special forces encounter Kuu and Duu in the palace’s convenient store. Goku’s group is forced to abandon their plane as it goes out of control, with Vegeta carrying Bulma and Hybis and Glorio carrying their two Dragon Balls. When they’re spotted by Gomah’s forces, they’re fired on.
Episode 13, “Surprise”
*****SPOILERS*****
Synopsis: Angry at the recent events, Gomah orders Dagasu shut off Lord Warp. Meanwhile, Goku and the gang’s ship crashes onto a planet of giants. There, they’re attacked first by giant hamsters, then a giant dog, then a giant grade-schooler. They are barely able to escape by using their ki.
Comments:
“Surprise”, indeed! Surprise: an episode of nothing but stupid bullshit!
We’ve seen giants in Dragon Ball before. The Fake Namek filler, GT, Anilaza in Super. I guess Toriyama wanted a dedicated giant planet, though, because that’s what this padded-to-fuck episode is about. Giant hamsters, giant dog, giant ticks, giant child. Small wonder. The idea of a giant planet is not a bad one in of itself, it’s very adventure-y, the kind of thing you’d see in early DB, and the concept has some charm, but here it just feels like a waste of time. Do I really care if Goku beats the big kid for no reward or advancement of the plot? Eh, not really.
