Outlaw Star Episode 19 – The Pilot Through the Backdoor

Meddling backdoor pilots. One minute you’ve a fantastic hangar of great aircraft, next minute some pilot sneaks through the backdoor, hijacks one of them for a joyride. Sometimes, the pilot does a good job and makes great use of your work. Other times, he crashes and leaves a hot, thick, mess on your runway that takes quite a bit of time to clean up. The things that happen when somebody comes behind your back and does things without your consent…

…Semen.

Anyway, this is the first time in Outlaw Star where the show delves into the third power of its universe: The Space Forces. Granted, the episode is based around Starwind and crew’s interaction with an entity INFLUENCED by the existence of the Space Force (or at least… its lack thereof on the frontier), but it is a delving into all the same. They are just about what you expect from some high-falootin’ space frontier show: by the books, brutal (sometimes in unnecessary ways), but at times noble in the high pursuit of space protection. It is kindof a shame we did not see them earlier in the animu, but their presence is welcome if a bit tardy. Worldbuilding is nice. read more

Outlaw Star Episode 14 – Mighty Bomb Hack

I think the celebration is too early for my continuing onward of this show, but the sentiment is appreciated.

So after the rather amusing diversion that was last week, this week tries its luck in a tense affair. An innocuous tugboat job for Gene, Jim, and Melfina is hacked and hijacked by a terrorist group with a penchant for cartoonish theatrics and an over the top Mickey Mouse-esque mask. Attached to an advertising spaceship with a bomb in it, Gene and the gang have to beat the clock to not only get out of being blown up but also find out who is this ‘Cracker Jack’ and what’s his game? read more

Outlaw Star Episode 10 – A Galaxy Goof-Up in the making?

First off, take this in. It’s the best shot in the episode and worth lingering on before heading into the space meat and potatoes that are my thoughts…

…Unfortunately those food products are a bit lean I’m sad to say.

This is where it’s all begins to fade. I thought I’d appreciate this episode more after years since the last time watching it, but alas. This is pretty much a prep work episode for the next one where the Space Race goes full throttle (pun intended), so we mostly have Gene and Jim setting things up as they go. We see Fred again, and he says yes to their request to sponsor them. We see Aisha again, in a humourous scene where she flips out and tries to make a move against Gene (charmingly after Gene tried to make a move on her). And… that’s it really. Suzuka bows out from joining the Space Race, and Melfina tries to do some research on her past but to no avail. I like the last part, since it means she’s still trying to be active in wanting to find out who she is. Gilliam’s also a bro about it, and it’s nice to see what I’ve missed in the AI. It’s also good to see how all our players (Starwind, McDougal, and Clan-Clan) find their way into the race, since I do not really remember that part of the episode. read more

Outlaw Star Episode 08 – Adventure Time

C’mon grab your girls; we’re going to very distant worlds. With Gene the Star and Jim the Genius, the fun never ends Adventure Time!

You know the episode will be a good one when Jet Black gives a motivational speech for the prologue instead of his usual world building. In fact, it is probably what Gene was listening to alongside Melfina when the healing process began on his wounds. Who knew the gelatinous substance suspending Melfina naked in the bridge also had healing properties as well. Seems a bit farfetched, but this is the Tao Magic, handship, caster gun universe, so I guess anything goes. read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 104 – WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3

Action Channel bled into October this year, but that’s fine, because I’m taking a week or two off to work on the Halloween episode!

Patlabor 3 is a strange beast. It’s barely a Patlabor movie, it’s barely a mecha movie, it’s barely an adaptation of its source material, and it’s… well, it’s kind of all over the place. It’s a kaiju horror film, it’s a hardboiled detective noir, it’s a thriller, it’s a buddy cop film, a tragedy, etc. I’m surprised that Wasted 13 didn’t end up being an interdimensional alien. But all in all, still compelling enough to rewatch without trouble. read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 102 – Vandread

It’s September, so naturally it’s time for another Action Channel Month (though I’ve fallen behind a bit, so expect some delays/bleeding into October). The Encore Action Channel provided me with a lot of anime to chew on in the early aughts, just when my anime fandom was kicking in highest gear, but they weren’t all Macross Plus and Metropolis. Some of them were just Vandread, a show that’s… well, somewhat memorable, at least, if just for the premise alone. read more

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Season 2 Episode 25 [FINAL] – A Rustaling of the Jimmies

SPOILERS

I had a feeling that I was gonna use the article title a week ago when I came up with it. I just did not expect to see it come to light in the way shown in the final episode.

The entire first half is dedicated to the last stand of Tekkadan, with the tunnel successfully made, with the remainder of the family sans Akihiro and Mika escaping by the skin of their teeth. Despite being the finale to a Gundam show, the ultimate bookending battle is bereft of any ideological waxing of various ideas like understanding one another and becoming a better humanity. It is just Akihiro and Mika laying waste to the myriad grunts of Gjallarhorn as they delay them long enough for their comrades to escape. Due to this lack of high-falootin’ conversations, it means a long winding episode of this battle is not in the cards, and pretty much ends when Rustal lets loose one final barrage of Dainsleif weapons on their base. Once you see the Barbatos and Gusion damaged from this one attack, the battle is pretty much over. Yet within all the well-done one sided killing, there is some catharsis to be had. Akihiro crushes Iok to death after recognizing who he was, and thus gives us *A* scalp to have despite the aftermath ending with Julieta killing Mika, decapitating the Barbatos and showing the head off as a trophy for all to see. read more

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Season 2 Episode 24 – The G-Wrekketsu-ning

SPOILERS

I don’t know why I even bother really. Every time an emotional event happens in this show, I expect it to be the ONE Mika has a reaction similar to everybody else breaking down and weeping. Within minutes after the opening occurs (which was led into by Mika being informed of Orga’s fate), Mika instead has his own St. Crispin’s Day speech. Despite Mika’s lack of flair, it is filled with determination, rallying the remainder of Tekkadan to follow through and escape while he and a small contingency of MS delay Gjallarhorn’s advance. Yes you can see a bit of sadness in Mika’s eyes, but his moments in this episode show how he doesn’t really harbor much delusion that he’s totally useless without Orga. read more

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Season 2 Episode 23 – Viva Orphans Namida

SPOILERS

Welp, despite the surrounding of their base by Gjallarhorn, Orga remains undeterred in his plan to get all of Tekkadan out of Mars. After watching this episode, and thinking about what I said this past week, I think I am in error in my perception of conviction then running away. Tekkadan for better or worse may be fighters, and will kill with impunity, but they are not conquerors. Even during Orga’s “I’m gonna be King of the Martians!” phase he is never shown to succumb to greed and ambition, nevermind the rest of Tekkadan. The title is merely a means to an end, and unfortunately for Tekkadan, that means is no longer viable in the long run. read more

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Season 2 Episode 22 – Final Pitstop on that Road to Renewed Strength and Promise?

It’s a bit vaguer in this episode given the circumstances of the plot details. The events of the past few weeks have been a bit more impactful than had already been revealed. However, it is kinda confusing because we ended the last episode with Orga and Mika brandishing some great resolve to do whatever it takes to bring peace…

…Yet it deflates rather quickly moments after they arrive back on Mars. While McGillis and Mika go off to do their thing (the former gets a pass because the head Gjallarhorn guy on Mars owes him one), Orga is faced with more financial hurdles. Accounts are frozen, nobody wants to talk to them, and news of their involvement with McGillis is broadcasted. Orga being Orga of course, buckles under the pressure and instead of giving a St. Crispin’s Day-esque speech about taking down Arianrhod, announces a chance for any and all reluctant Tekkadan members to leave. A lot of them are outraged at this, yet at least we see Zack’s bellyaching go somewhere when he announces he’s leaving. read more
