Dragon Ball Z Kai- Episode 14 Review

Episode 14, "Kamehameha Clash! Vegeta's Tenacious Grand Transformation"

*****SPOILERS*****

Synopsis: Utilizing the Kaioken technique to the third power, Goku quickly takes control of the battle. Enraged that a "low-classed" Saiyan is beating him, Vegeta decides to destroy the entire planet with his Gallic Ho technique, but Goku counters with a 4x Kaioken-powered Kamehameha, which overcomes Vegeta and sends him into the stratosphere. Despite a congratulations from Yajirobe, Goku isn't relieved yet, knowing Vegeta will return. Vegeta looks for the moon so that he might transform into an Oozaru (Giant Ape), but when he can't find it (Piccolo destroyed it previously), he decides to create an artificial moon with his ki. He transforms and menaces Goku, who can't concentrate long enough to form a Genki Dama.

Comments:

Goku and Vegeta only do battle twice in the entirety of DBZ, but both bouts are probably some of the best material in the entire series. Kai is presenting them very well, with everything occuring naturally, as if they're not even cutting it down at all. It's to a point where I don't even notice what they're cutting or when, and just watching it as if it were an original episode of the series, finding it pretty exciting overall, especially with the quality in which it's shown.

The video quality is, at last check, a bit cleaned up, and the colors a little brighter, but without oversaturation, like it seems at times in Funimation releases. I'm enjoying the sound effects, too. However, the music is still a little lackluster, most of the time, and they go from one piece to another too quickly and too often. The only pieces I liked were the one that played at the beginning when Goku was beating up Vegeta and the one just after Vegeta created the artificial moon.

It's funny, because I can remember this part in the original Ocean dub, because Vegeta stated it was Goku's father was "a brilliant scientist" who came up with the idea of the artificial moons. Why they felt like they needed to put that in is beyond me. Bardock was a low-class grunt who led a group of cleaners that wiped out planets, not a brilliant scientist in any manner. In fact, there probably weren't any brilliant Saiyans at all, except in the field of fighting. Most of their scientific knowhow came from Freeza and his minions. Well, maybe Ocean figured they'd never get as far as the DBZ Bardock Special (they didn't), or even knew about it.

Anyway, a great episode, probably the best thus far.

Overall Score:

4.5 out of 5
