Another Mid Year English Dub Review has me going through all the English dubs of the anime I’ve reviewed so far this year. I even threw in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, though I only touch upon that briefly. In fact, I just noticed that I didn’t really talk about the dub studios much. I’ll be more thorough at the end of the year.
Pen Pen stranded me in the UK a couple of videos ago and I’m still cross about it. But hey, that flat cap I bought in Scotland is a very cool hat. Just don’t expect to see my sprite wear it.read more
This video premieres the new Penguin Council, which is almost all-new, excluding Peggy (from Tokyo ESP, an anime I’m reviewing soon). There’s Mike from Penguin’s Memory, Nick from Adventures of the Little Koala (Koala Boy Kockey), DJ Grooves from the A Hat in Time game, and Esmeralda from Penguindrum. The Penguin Council is the Penguin Union’s central government. At one point, the assassin Ravex murdered a couple of members of the original Council.
We also get me complaining about the adaptation of The Long Halloween, which I didn’t like. Apparently, like with the Evangelion dub, I’m in the minority opinion, because people seem to really like the Part One movie, but I despised how it only broadly captured the plotline of the comic, whereas adaptations of The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One rarely deviated and were very good. I’m a huge Batman guy, so The Long Halloween is an important storyline to me and needed to be handled just right, and wasn’t. I’m sorry, I just can’t abide by the differences. But perhaps, like Peggy suggested, I should just stick to the comic if I want the comic’s storyline faithfully.read more
2020 was a horrific year. The year saw a pandemic, social strife, and an election that seems to still linger (for some reason). We lost Kobe Bryant and Alex Trebek, and many of us lost people even closer. So it feels a bit frivolous to care so much about a silly little anime review show that few people even watch to begin with. The weight of this year is heavy. But maybe that’s why we need some lighthearted frivolity now and then.
I’m moving along in the Lithos storyline, which will carry over into the new year, with some more bits about the Penguinopolis Mk. II. I have a general idea where I want the story to go, but don’t get hung up on direction, because there are elements where I’m just winging it.read more
More wrap-around material in this one. This will be the last one for a while, though I have plenty of ideas for that stuff. I wanted to do something with Ambassador Morran and thought I’d throw in the assassin Ravex as well, since I’ve barely used him. Here they’re visiting Golex’s people, the Lithos, for some reason. I’ll get to that another time. After this, I want to concentrate more on the reviews themselves.
Speaking of the reviews, I’m glad I didn’t have to suffer through too many lousy dubs in this half of the year. I didn’t plan based on dub studios, just based on what I felt like reviewing or what I had time to review when I scheduled everything. I only have a tenuous schedule for the second half of the year, though I did name drop some of the things I’ll be doing at the end of this video.read more

I was going to do something else for this episode, but I wanted to get this one in so my 150th video is something that suits the number. Besides which, it’s nice to once in a while take time to appreciate the voice talent actually playing the anime characters we watch develop. I do have something special planned for next episode, but this one is special in its own way. I should really do more of these later on.
I know nobody gives a crap about my dumb sprite padding material, most especially because if you hadn’t ever read my comic strips, there’s about zero context, and you can’t even read them anymore, except the sparse amount I put up on my DeviantArt gallery. The whole “storyline” bullshit? It’s for me. It’s basically just for me to work out story ideas I had that I never got to in my strips. Hopefully it provides some kind of atmosphere, regardless of context. But that aside, while I am committed to doing *less* of it in 2019, you’ll still see it. It’s not like I get any more or less views in videos that have it.read more
It’s been quite a year here on Otaku Evolution. Shuffling videos from platform to platform because of Copyright Dragons, re-recording reviews for quality, reaching my 100th episode, and just generally being exhausted and largely unsuccessful. I may have extended my viewer base, though, which means I think now… *checks notes* 12 people regularly watch these. Maybe by this time next year, I’ll have 16! Grabbing for that brass ring.
But anyway, as usual, this is a review of the English dubs for the anime I covered since my Mid Season English Dub Review plus some of that wonderful bookend material I love to afflict upon myself and others. Flying fortresses! Penguins! Plot threads from my old comic strips nobody will remember!read more
It’s the last episode of the year as I look at the English dubs of the anime I’ve covered since the mid season episode. I examine dubs by Funimation, Manga Entertainment, Animaze, Central Park Media, ADV, and others! Which will I praise? Which will I burn? And what’s the deal with that refrigerator, how did that close seemingly on its own (shut up is how)? It’s time to wrap things up for a while, and stay tuned for more in the new year.
2015 ends, without any pesky Third Impacts, and a bare minimum of Tang. But there’s plenty going on in the season finale of Otaku Evolution, where Penguin Truth takes on a variety of anime English dubs, including Lupin, Gundam, Golgo, Death Note, and more!
