Otaku Evolution Episode 118 – Mid Year English Dub Review IV

Ah, the middle of the year (was over a month ago!). A great time to go over the English dubs of anime I’ve covered thus far in 2018, so I don’t have to cover a year’s worth at the end of the year. This is also an opportunity to talk about the myriad of different ADR studios, specific dubs, and voice actors encountered in these videos.

And hey, only a pre-title bit, no after-credits bit! I’m actually going to retire those things until late October. It’s been taking me two or three weeks to do videos that should only take a single week, maybe a week and half, to finish, these days. I do love my leftover detritus from my old sprite comic, but I need to concentrate on the actual REVIEW part of each review video. read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 114 – Giant Robo (OVA)

Ah, Giant Robo. Best anime I’ve reviewed so far this year. This classic 7-episode OVA, directed by Yasuhiro Imagawa, combines classic Chinese wuxia, Western retro-future, and good ol’ mecha action to give us a celebration of Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s work. It’s a real stunner, folks. It has exciting action, gripping drama, splendid art/animation, fantastic music and sound design, and is even greater than the sum of its parts. Imagawa is criminally underrated and we’re all lucky to have him in the industry. So join me in this look at one of my favorite anime of all time, Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still! read more

Otaku Revolution’s Top 15 Anime Soundtracks: 5-2

Introduction | 15-11 | 10-6 | 5-2 | 1 | Honorable Mentions

5. Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (Various, but mostly Beat Crusaders)

It’s no surprise that a TV series about musicians has some great music. What is a surprise is just how many talents were involved in it all. Sure, the majority of the tracks are done by the Beat Crusaders, with their alternative/indie-punkish sound, like White Stripes by way of Blind Melon. But there are contributions by composer Michiru Oshima (Fullmetal Alchemist), The High-Lows, YeLLOW Generation, and even The Pillows. It’s a great soundtrack to the rise of a smalltime band and the feelings of emerging youth. Favorites of mine include the opening theme, “Hit in the USA” and “Moon on the Water”. Sure, a lot of it is Engrish-y, but if you prefer, the English dub offers straight English versions. read more
