Happy Halloween! I thought I’d review an anime that, while not necessarily horror-themed, is a horror itself, and what bigger horror than the existence of Violence Jack, one of the trashiest, bloodiest, mean-spirited OVA anime of all time? So cower under a blanket as you watch this in the dark and I hope you don’t eat so much candy you get sick!

It’s time again for my annual Halloween video! This time I took a page out of my first year’s Halloween fare, Hellsing, with a review of Hellsing Ultimate, the 10-episode more-accurate-to-the-manga adaptation of Kouta Hirano’s manga. It’s big, it’s loud, it’s kind of silly, but it’s oh so compelling, a monster mash with an operatic flair. So pour a bowl of mini Kit Kats, open a pumpkin beer, and let’s watch an OP mega-vampire fight Nazis! Hey, if you’re going to be a denizen of a undead horde, don’t also be a bigot!
It actually took a couple of weeks to make this (all things considered) pretty short Halloween episode that might be a bit padded, but I’m otherwise pretty satisfied with. Like last year, I didn’t want to go with a ghouls and monsters title, I wanted something more psychological, and while there are, in fact, supernatural boogie(pop)men in this, it’s very much in the same vein as Serial Experiments Lain in the way it gets you to think about the social commentary as much as the characters and plot, if not more. So enjoy my review of Boogiepop Phantom, a veritable Russian nesting doll of a narrative, and form a few memory butterflies as you watch.
In my spooky Halloween episode for 2016 (a very frightening year!), I don’t go for ghouls and ghosts, nor zombies and witches, but a monster borne from the very human mind and the cultural around us! But what does this say about my own demons? It’s about time Satoshi Kon got his due on my show as I take a look at Paranoia Agent!
