Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen – Episode 25 Review

Episode 25, "Reversal! The Sun Sets on Bardos Island!"

Synopsis: With the Photon Power Labs destroyed, Dr. Hell orders his subordinates to take the Japanium ore. The Mazinger Corps seemingly falls in battle with the Mechanical Beasts. God Scrander arrives and Kouji gains the advantage, destroying the enemies around him. The Kurogane Five find that Tsubasa is missing and Akokuji has escaped from his prison. Yasu steps up to defend the house from Baron Ashura, but discovers the bomb in him has been taken by Tsubasa. Boss, in the Boss Borot tries his best to fight Ashura, with the support of Django. The Boss Borot plows into Ashura and explodes. Sayaka’s dead emerges from the ruins of the labs with several Pygmans walking towards him, but Sayaka arrives. Pygman attacks but is attacked himself by Akokuji, Gamia, and a figure called Blade, who seemingly kills Pygman. Tsubasa wriggles free from a fake Kenzo and demands the real one appear. She prepares to destroy him with Yasu’s bomb, but he requests to be heard before she does so. The Mazinger attacks Count Brocken and he gets into his own mecha. Duke Gorgon appears before Ashura, but the Goul airship falls on him. Dr. Hell’s Bardos Island itself arrives, but the scientists reveal a Photon Power-powered battle fortress. The Mazinger Corps rallies, their escape crafts combining with backup mecha and they attack Bardos Island. Dr. Hell comes out in his mecha, King of Hell. read more

Episode 24, "Deadline! Dr. Hell’s Full-Scale Assault"

Synopsis: As Kouji arrives at the place of duel with Baron Ashura, Dr. Hell’s armies begin their full-scalle assault on Atami. Sayaka leaves the Kurogane House to return to the Photon Power Labs. Tsubasa tells her to forget the shadow she saw while staying there. The Kurogane bunch prepare to fight the oncoming enemy. Ankokuji and Gamia are thrown into a special oubliette. God Scrander is launched to help Kouji and Mazinger, who are locked in combat with several Mechanical Beasts, as Kouji has been led into a trap. Viscount Pygman has arrived in Atami ahead of the rest of Count Brocken’s forces and prepares to attack the Photon Power Labs. However, Baron Ashura has meanwhile begun attacking the city itself. It turns out that the Ashura robot at the duel is two other Mechanical Beasts in disguise. The Mazinger Corps launch into combat as Pygman arrives. A figure arrives at the prison Akokuji has been put in. Kouji finds himself overwhelmed by the number of enemies and their great power. The Kurogane forces go into battle with Dr. Hell’s forces, with Boss using his Boss Borot robot to intercept a giant missile. Pygman tricks the scientists and gains access to the lab, but Sayaka’s father self-destructs the entire facility. Meanwhile, Kenzo Kabuto appears before Tsubasa. Enraged, she attacks him. read more

Episode 23, "Incoming! Mechanical Beast Baron Ashura"

Synopsis: The scientists at Photon Power Lab complete Sayaka’s new robot, Venus A. In the surrounding excitement, Kouji gets closer to Sayaka. Dr. Hell’s forces attack Japan’s military and the Mazinger Corp are busy. The Lab puts up a forcefield bubble. Boss and his cronies paint his own robot, the Boss Borot. The Mazinger Corp are confronted by Ashura’s robot. Kouji, Shiro, and Kabuto visit Juuzo’s grave, where a hologram of Dr. Hell appears to offer a chance at settling everything with a fight between the Mazinger and Ashura’s robot. Sayaka attacks in the Venus A, but it does no damage to Ashura’s machine, and she is subdued. Boss, his group, and Shiro want Kouji to accept the duel, despite it going against Tsubasa’s plans, but he promises Sayaka he’ll stick to whatever Tsubasa has in mind. However, the morning after spending time with her, Kouji heads off to the duel in the Mazinger. read more

Episode 22, "Dreams! Ashura’s Sleeping Cocoon!"

Synopsis: Dr. Hell contemplates the final battle and is confronted by Duke Gorgon, who mysteriously disappears. It is revealed that Pygman traded places with Ashura during the scramble to get Ashura after his disappearance. At the Kurogane residence, Boss’s lackies try to convince Kouji that Boss needs his own robot to pilot. Akokuji agrees and says he’ll take care of it. When Ashura awakes from dreams of the past, he/she tries to kill his/herself, but cannot. Dr. Hell has put a suggestion in Ashura that prevents him/her from taking his/her life as long as he is alive. Then Dr. Hell reveals that he’s made a special mecha for Ashura and sends him/her, Pygman, and Brocken to attack the Photon Power Labs. read more

Episode 21, "Grudge! The Longest Day at Kurogane House: Part 3"

Synopsis: Tsubasa summons the arm of Zeus from its hiding spot- the Japanium ore pile underneath the Photon Power Labs. The pilot of Energer Z is revealed to be Count Brocken, who activates its self-destruct program to combat the arm. Thanks to a computer program on board the Mazinger, Kouji is able to use the power of Zeus’s arm to destroy the Energer Z. To protect herself from being targeted, Tsubasa invites detectives from across Japan to protect her at the Kurogane House, along with the returning Kurogane Five. Also returning is Akokuji, who brings with him a reprogrammed Gamia, as well as news that the real Kenzo Kabuto is still alive. As they prepare for the upcoming battle, Dr. Hell attacks with Bardos Island itself. read more

Episode 19, "Grudge! The Longest Day at Kurogane House: Part 1"

Synopsis: Dr. Hell has identified Tsubasa as a major threat to his plans, and dispatches Viscount Pygman to remove her. Pygman summons the ghost of Tetsuya Tsurugi, a pilot who worked with the Bardos research time piloting Kenzo’s prototype robot. Kouji consults Baron Ashura, who is being hunted by his former allies, in helping Tsubasa. Pygman arrives at the Kurogane House as a hologram and a robot appears that looks very much like Mazinger Z. It’s called Energer Z, and it’s piloted by Kenzo Kabuto. read more

Episode 18, "Obliteration! Mycenae Armageddon!"

Synopsis: Kouji, Tsubasa, Ashura, and others are trapped in the Kedora’s memory world, watching events involving Duke Gorgon and Ashura’s former selves. Ashura is captured and the others escape at the apparent cost of Cross and Yasu’s lives. Gorgon seals Tristan and Iseult away in anticipation of Hades’ arrival. Then he tricks Zeus into thinking Ashura is a sacrifice, and Hades strikes, injuring him. Django and Master sacrifice themselves to defeat Gorgon while Kouji uses the Mazinger to fight Garadoubla. Tsubasa convinces Ashura to open the gate to where the Kedora is and kills it while Kouji joins Zeus in defeating Hades. Kouji, Tsubasa, and Ashura return to the real world, only to see the Kedora’s final revelation, which features Kouji’s father and Dr. Hell finding Ashura’s cacoon. read more

Synopsis: Duke Gorgon is defeated by Count Brocken explosive bodies, but Kedora continues to menace, going after the Japanium ore under the Photon Power Labs. Reluctantly, Kouji and Tsubasa team up with Ashura to pursue the escaped Kedora into a dream world that it created of its memories, where everything in it can actually hurt those who’ve entered. There, they see the history of Ashura’s former selves, Tristan and Iseult, and their pact with Duke Gorgon to kill Zeus with the help of Hades. Unfortunately, the whole group is found by Gorgon and his team and face the Mechanical Beast Garadoubla. read more

Episode 15, "Showdown! The Sorrowful Blue Danube!"

Synopsis: The hologram of Kenzo Kabuto is revealed to be a program placed in Gamia to fool Stroheim. Baron Ashura returns to the mansion with a Mechanical Beast borrowed from Count Brocken, demanding to be given the Danube, Stroheim’s giant robot. Ashura is able to use his/her staff to control it, but is confronted by Stroheim. Ashura counters the scientist’s electric shock, sending him falling off of the Mechanical Beast to his death. As he lay dying, Stroheim reveals Lorelei’s true nature, the core of the Danube, and instructs her to take control of it. She complies, much to his delight, and destroys the Mechanical Beast. She then challenges the reactivated Mazinger Z, but Kouji overcomes her. Shiro cries as the Danube, and Lorelei, destroyed, call his name. read more

Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen – Episode 14 Review

Episode 14, "Shame! The Sin of the Kaburo Family Laid Bare!"

Synopsis: Ankokuji spots Baron Ashura and his troops on their way to Stroheim’s mansion and disguises himself as one of them to get in and retrieve Gamia. Stroheim reveals to Shiro that Tsubasa is his mother, having had a child with Kenzo Kabuto, who worked with Juuzo, Dr. Hell, and himself. Shiro finds this impossible to believe and turns to leave, but Lorelei implores him to stay, or else he’ll get lost in the fog. Ashura comes to claim Stroheim’s robot for Dr. Hell, but Stroheim fights back, causing him/her and the troops to flee. Ankokuji meets up with Shiro, but Shiro wants to rescue Lorelei before he leaves. While in discussion, Tsubasa and Stroheim are interrupted by a hologram image of Lorelei, which transforms into Kenzo Kabuto, claiming to have returned from the dead. read more
