AQUA INTEGRAL EPISODE PROJECT L [i.e. Best episodes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force ellipses For All Time] (50-41)

Their names were: Shake zula, the mic rula, the old schoola. If you wanted a trip, he’d bring it to ya. Frylock he was on top, rocked you like a cop. Meatwad was up next with his knock-knock. Meatwad, got the money see? Meatwad, got the honeys see? Drove in his car, lived like a star, ice on my toes and my fingers and I’m a Taurus. Cuz they were the Aqua Teens. They made the homies say ho and the girlies wanna scream.

Can you believe it? It’s been fifteen years since Cartoon Network aired “Rabbot”, and then had Aqua Teen Hunger Force as a flagship title for their daring new venture, Adult Swim. As it found its groove, the ten minute adventures of Master Shake, Frylock, Meatwad and their neighbor Carl got more violent, more surreal, yet stayed quite hilarious. It didn’t matter if Zombie Ninja Pro-AM was shit, or if their movie’s promotional campaign inadvertently started a bomb scare in Boston, the Aqua Teens remained. But now, Adult Swim president Mike Lazzo is ready to “move on from it”, despite creators Matt Maellaro and Dave Willis’s desire to continue. read more

ANIME TOP TEN (LIST #1) FOLLOW-UP

Okay, so I’ve completed list #1, which covers anime TV shows and multi-part OVAs. But before I move onto the next list, I thought I’d give you a taste of what the rest of the list would look like if I did a top 20.

#s 11-20:

11. Bubblegum Crisis OVA – Cyberpunk at its best. Part Blade Runner, part Streets of Fire, the ultraviolent 80s retro-future world of MegaTokyo and the Knight Sabers makes for hours of entertainment. The music and strong voice performances are also to be commended.
12. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – Provocative and enriching, this series also kicks a lot of ass. Maybe a little technobabble heavy at times, though.
13. Giant Robo – A fast-paced, emotion-heavy, passionate epic and monument to Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s works. Director Yasuhiro Imagawa’s magnum opus, as far as I’m concerned.
14. Macross Plus – My favorite Macross work, this story of rivalry and love never fails to deliver, whether it’s on drama or action. Yoko Kanno’s score is brilliant.
15. FLCL – This OVA does more with six episodes than most programs with 26+. A fun and worthwhile watch that warns against growing up too fast.
16. Last Exile – Wonderfully immersive, and with a well-constructed world. It’s hard to beat those airship battles!
17. Space Battleship Yamato 2 – An alternate version of Farewell, this is more fleshed out and has a different ending.
18. Turn A Gundam –  While suffering from a few pacing issues, this series is nevertheless beautiful and soulful, concentrating on the characters rather than the combat, and providing an interesting backdrop and unique mechanical designs. It’s my favorite non-UC Gundam work.
19. Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket – Of all the many Gundam productions over the years, this is one of the best written ones. Instead of being about ace pilots, psychics, giant battles, and masked men, this small little slice of the One Year War revolves around a boy’s youthful enthusiasm for a war he knows little about, a war he sees as a game. Instead of many meaningless deaths, the few deaths here mean everything.
20. Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team – Combining gritty grunt combat with a sweet (if somewhat hurried) love story. It loses focus at times, but remains strong where it makes its points. One of the finest Gundam productions. read more

ANIME TOP TEN (LIST #1) – #6: Vision of Escaflowne (1996)

Director(s): Kazuki Akane
Screenplay: Shoji Kawamori
Music: Yoko Kanno
Everything comes together so well in Vision of Escaflowne. First of all, there’s a great and wonderous new world created on Gaia, a mix of midieval, Renaissance, and steampunk motifs. You really get a good feel for the world and its people (and beast-people). It’s a world whose secrets unravel as the story moves. I really like the Guymelefs, the giant combat armors that are like magic machines, and the combat and lore. Themes of fate, love, and loss shine a light on the story and characters. Yoko Kanno’s soundtrack is gorgeous, providing sweeping, powerful context to the actions on screen. It really helps to lift the series above similarly well-crafted works into an exciting epic journey.

Penguin Truth’s TOP TEN ANIME LISTS (PRIMER)

It’s been years since I began writing for Otaku Revolution, and some of you regular readers (all two of you) may still be in the dark as to what taste in anime I have. So, though it’s an often-changing element of my anime fandom, I’ve decided to make a list of my favorite anime, ranking them for all to see, and justifying my choices.

When people make top ten lists of their favorite anime, they tend to make the same mistake. That is, they group together TV series, OVAs, and movies. A TV series and a movie are two different beasts. You wouldn’t lump together live-action TV series with live-action movies, would you? Would you even lump together American or other Western animated productions together, TV shows with movies? Of course not. But for anime, somehow this tends to be the way we do things. Well, I, for one, refuse. read more

Audio: English: My Favorite English VAs in Anime

With the Audio:English series, PenguinTruth takes a critical look at the English
dubs which grace some of anime’s most defining series in North America.

As somebody with a critical eye on anime English dubs, I’m often at odds with a reputation for "hating" dubs and dub voice actors. But the truth is, there are plenty of very talented voice actors working in English dubs of anime. I’m fond of quite a few of them and have definite favorites. I’ve even been able to rank them in their own "tiers". But let’s put tier rankings aside, because this is just a list of the dub VAs I like the most. I’ve also listed the roles I like them in the most. read more

Audio: English – Good, Tolerable, and Terrible and the Tiers Game

With the Audio:English series, PenguinTruth takes a critical look at the English
dubs which grace some of anime’s most defining series in North America.

If you’ve ever been to 4chan, you know that they love tier charts. This is where they seperate things in categories of quality. Usually the top tier is "GOD TIER" and the lowest is "SHIT TIER", and I’ve done this myself, even here (my Gundam Tiers articles, for instance, which you can expect a follow up to sometime this or next year). However, unlike Anonymous at at 4chan, I’m actually capable and willing to explain and/or defend my choices as to what is truly "god" and what is "shit" in terms of the trival stuff I like. read more

Top 15 Dragon Ball/Z/GT Moments (EDITED)

So, yeah, I thought I would write about my favorite (animated) parts of the Dragon Ball franchise. It took a while to gather (and in some case, make) clips to go with these entries. There are a lot of good moments in the franchise, even though the overall quality varies, and I’m sure there are plenty of good bits I’ve overlooked. If you feel I’ve missed good ones, please do comment and explain why.

15) Z’s Finale

Series: Dragon Ball Z
