Netflix: Destroying Gurren Lagann One Episode at a Time [Updated x2]

Right now Netflix has a pretty sweet collection of anime available to watch instantly. Gurren Lagann is one of them as well. However, Netflix members should avoid watching the via the service, especially if you haven't viewed it already.

That's because one of the most important episodes, episode 8, is missing!

Welcome to Otaku Revolution v2!

Welcome to Otaku Revolution v2!

After well over 24 hours I was able successfully replicate OR as we knew it to a dev platform and upgrade it from Drupal 5.x to 6.x. Most of that time was spent on the upgrade itself, what with having to restore the files and database over and over and over again until successful.

Along with the inherent benefits of 6.x there are some new modules (such as a WYSIWYG editor for Penguin Truth) to help classy up the place.

The most noticeable change of all is the theme. Not a huge diversion from the one everyone is used to, but a huge improvement none the less. You'll probably notice that a lot of our old posts will have a shit load of extra white space. That's due to the increased width of our new theme. In future we'll actually be able to share videos at more reasonable sizes.

Progress!

OtakuRevolution.net is on its way back! Earlier this week, I got the domain working again (seems I missed a step on the host side), and tonight I've re-uploaded the first few strips - my ever-sporadic Halloween specials.

I'm currently in the process of updating all of my strips. By "updating" I mean that I'm fixing a lot of spriting errors that occurred over the first six-plus years of strips, when I had a horrible monitor that made every color value below #3C3C3C look black. (I really hated that monitor...) Basically, the outlines that look like several shades of gray, brown, green, or red will all now be the near-black #141414 I've been using consistently since the beginning of the wedding reception arc.

I'm looking at getting OR:TS back online sometime this weekend, while 2015 will be restored later. I've yet to start the sprite-fixing on that one.

OR.net on its way back

So, yeah, I've got a new host for OR.net, as noted a little earlier on the OR LiveJournal: http://otakurevolution.freehostingnoads.net I've reset otakurevolution.net's name servers, so by this time Monday night, OR.net should be pointing to the new site. If not, I'll have to work on that... but in the meantime, the link above is live. For the moment, I haven't uploaded any strips yet, as I'm actually looking at possibly fixing some things up before uploading everything. Since I plan on being off on Thursday and Friday, though, I'll have a nice, long 4-day weekend to get that done. In the meantime, I do have a button you can use here, if you want to replace the text link under "Our Friends"... it's basically just a reformatted version of my current main page's title image:

Help out OR: Fund Drive 2010

As some of you may know I sell some of my photographs online to help fund my expensive gunpla addiction. While every purchase helps the site out a little it's time to put that money back in directly. 50% of all proceeds, through the end of November, will be sent directly to Mike (aka Penguin Truth). Throughout the year I try and send Mike some goodies as thanks for the hard work he puts in here. This year he's added a unique set of Tenchi figures and a couple of Orson Scott Card box sets to his collect. When he's not internationally upsetting voice actors his reviews bring an insight only he can offer. His weekly Fullmetal reviews were unparalleled. The rest of the proceeds will go into hosting and other related costs of running the site.

Full Armor Unicorn Prototype Ver. Introduction

A while back I set into motion a rather ambitious project. A third MG Unicorn themed off of the Full Armor version. It's not going to have all of the bells and whistles though. It'll be toned down a little bit, but should be impressive none the less. It'll also feature a four toned paint job (white, light gray, gray, dark gray) and a brilliant metalic green for the psycho frame.

Mom blames manga, library, for putting her son into "home for extensive therapy"

Looks like ignorant, irresponsible, parents are at it again...

A Japanese serial graphic novel genre popular with young teens has raised the ire of a Crestview mother whose teenage son got hold of an adult version of the genre from the Crestview Public Library. “Manga” depicts highly stylized adventure and, occasionally, violence in fantasy settings.

Margaret Barbaree, founder of a citizens’ group called Protect Our Children, presented examples from a manga book to the Crestview City Council Monday evening that she described as “graphic” and “shocking,” taken from material she said is “available to children” at the Crestview Public Library.

“My son lost his mind when he found this,” Barbaree said of the manga book from which her examples were taken. She said her son had removed the book unsupervised from the library’s general stacks last summer and put it in his backpack. “Now he’s in a home for extensive therapy.” Earlier this year, Barbaree had circulated a petition bearing 226 signatures of citizens protesting the availability of manga, which she mistakenly referred to as “anime,” which is actually Japanese animation. However library said some patrons complained they were misled when they signed the petition. “They told us she (Barbaree) approached them at the Christmas parade and asked them to sign a petition protesting pornography in the library,” said Resource Librarian Sandra Dreaden. Barbaree said Library Director Jean Lewis explained to her that there is a demand for manga, and that the library strives to meet the needs of its patrons. Council President Charles Baugh Jr. assured Barbaree that “We have safeguards in place to protect our children and we have committees that review library purchases so they meet the standards of the [American] Library Association.” The books that concerned Barbaree “are in the library for those who wish to partake of them and they are in a section of the library” for adult patrons, said Baugh, who visited the library himself the day after the council meeting and said he found the manga available in the young adult section perfectly innocuous. “We follow up with our citizens’ concerns,” Baugh said after meeting with library staff and viewing the young adult manga. Baugh also confirmed that the book Barbaree’s son had accessed was in the general stacks well away from the children’s and young adult books. “Our library is well managed and well staffed,” Baugh told Barbaree while assuring her, “I am a family man and I understand what you are saying.” Lewis said the manga available in the young adult section of the library is oriented toward young teen readers and does not contain the adult themes of the book Barbaree’s son took. That book had been in the general stacks, on a top shelf in a section with other graphic novels and comic books not geared toward young readers. “We have policies and procedures in place to prevent underage children from accessing those materials,” Baugh said.
