Layman’s Gunpla Guide – Detail Line Tutorial

Line detailing is the simple process of painting or otherwise coloring the detail lines that criss cross your Gunpla. This process can be very easy to very difficult depending how you want to go about things. Regardless, in the end your kit will go from…

…to…

Not sure what to use? Check out the Detailing & Painting Equipment page.

Paint Prep

If you’re going to use paint, you need to a bit of prep first. No matter which paint you’re going to use for this application you need to mix it with thinner until it achieves a watery consistency and can run smoothly. This will allow the paint to run along the lines, and if you’re fortunate, save yourself a lot of work. If you’re working on a kit that’s been painted with flat paints it’s very important to cover the piece in a good gloss coat. This helps smooth out the surface to allow the paint to flow freely again. Even if you didn’t use a flat paint it’s a good idea as it will help protect the paint below. Most importantly, use a different type of top coat than the paint below and the kind you’re using for the detail lines. If you don’t the thinner in the line mixture will eat away the paint below. read more

Layman’s Gunpla Guide – Dry Brushing Tutorial

Dry brushing is an extremely simple and easy way to add scratch marks around your kit or depth to its internal frame. What makes the process easy is that you only need a brush and some paint. What makes the process special is that you’re applying the paint when it’s nearly dry. This allows for only a little bit of paint to be applied at a time and in thinner, narrower streaks than you’d get with regularly applied paint.

Dry Brushing the Internal Frame

The only equipment you need for this method is stiff bristled brush, some paint, and paper whose color contrasts with the paint you’re using. I like to use an old toothbrush and save myself the trouble of buying a brush just for this purpose. read more

Willis Sears Tower vs. John Hancock Center: Which Attraction Reigns Supreme?

(click on most of the images in this article to view their larger cousins)

Much to my surprise, Chicago is quite the awesome city, rivaling NYC in many ways. I first visited it for work a few months back and decided to take a short vacation and explore the downtown area. There’s a lot to see and do, more so than my meager four days allowed for. My first time out there I did most of the touristy things, including a visit to two of Chicago’s most recognizable landmarks, the John Hancock Center and the Sears Tower. Err, Willis Tower as it’s now called. Both offer some of the best views of the city, looking down. After visiting each skyscraper the question arose, is it worth visiting both? If not, which one is the preferred stop? read more

9-12 DC Tea Bag Protest, Debunking Moilanen and Creating an Estimate – Update #3

There’s a new document floating around the internet entitled “The Real Number of Protesters at the 9/12 Washington D.C. March” by a Zac Moilanen of Indiana University. It, falsely, attempts to calculate and show the number of protesters at the recent 9-12 march and rally that occurred in DC. I’m told it was recently referenced by FOX News’ Glenn Beck. In all honesty, the rally was little different from the ones that occurred this past summer across the US. Apparently the only outcome from this event has been debate about the amount of protesters who participated. The participants and advocates for them immediately claimed an amazing 2 million participated while the DC Fire Department estimated 60,000 to 70,000. The right wing “blogosphere” has even posted picture of other large DC rallies as evidence of the larger number. I attempt to address that issue, and the Moilanen document, here. read more
