Elyn Hobby 1/100 Kshatriya – A Mobile Suit Emerges

[flickr-photo:id=20919110851,size=n] It’s alive! Sort of…

Oh, Bandai, why didn’t you just release a MG Kshatriya years ago? Would’ve saved me sooo much effort.

Before I begin, I should point out that this project has inadvertently placed me in an informal build off with Lighted Pants over on r/Gunpla. You might have seen his astonishing MG Epyon. It’s an informal build off in the sense that I’ve pretty much already broken every rule LP has attempted to set up. The only one that still stands is that we’ve got to get these kits wrapped up by Nov 30th, or else admit defeat. Should be more than enough time assuming I don’t pick up Destiny again, or Fallout 5 when it’s released. read more

Elyn Hobby 1/100 Kshatriya/Kastrysha – Project Start

[flickr-photo:id=20646762091,size=n] For all the kit’s faults, the packaging is pretty damn impressive…

Welp, a year ago I picked up the monster that is the Elyn Hobby 1/100 Kshatriya/Kastrysha (the mobile suit is the Kshatriya, but the box says Kastrysha). It’s a massive kit. There has to be well over 500, if not 600, individual parts. The box is as large as a Perfect Grade’s and the build is going to be even more complex. Sure, all of the pieces come pre-cut from the runners and specially packaged… but that’s likely the cause of this kit’s main issue. read more

PG Unicorn Gundam – The One Week Build

Last weekend I started out on an ambitious build. Well, the build itself wasn’t so nuts, the time frame was. The goal was to build a PG Unicorn in one week. Here’s how things turned out…

o why only a week? It didn’t start off that way. Up until now it’s been awhile since I’ve painted a kit. Lots of straight builds, but nothing since I finished my White Glint back in January. I’ve been trying to decide which kit I should do a simple job with, just to scrape off some of the rust, when I wound up with a second PG Unicorn. As I was thinking about how to paint it, figuring I’d get it knocked out relatively quickly, another project landed in my lap. With two kits I wanted to get done in short time, and a schedule conducive to tackling the Unicorn, I figured I’d try a super quick build. That eventually morphed into a weekend-to-weekend build, then into a Sunday-to-Saturday express build from hell. read more

Seraph Hobby 1/35 Banshee Gundam Bust – A Quick Review

I wanted to take some time to review my first non-Bandai Gunpla release, the 1/35 scale Banshee Bust from Seraph Hobby. I’ve got a few option pieces here and there but never a full blown kit so it has been a pretty interesting experience. I picked this up via the always great decal resource, Samuel Decal. If you follow the link you’ll see Seraph Hobby’s press photos for the kit.

Perhaps I should start by saying that I in no way condone Bandai knockoffs. If you have the choice between a Bandai made kit, and a reprint from TT Hongli, go Bandai every time. Every review I’ve ever seen has easily placed the Bandai product as the superior release. Sure, Bandai’s releases generally cost more but it’s worth it. Plus you should really support the folks who took the time to develop, design, and manufacture the original product. However, when you start talking about kits that Bandai doesn’t make, it’s a massive gray area. Awhile back I started getting these PG sized action bases which are just reprints of the one included with the PG 00 Gundam plus some extra pieces to support every PG kit. The one included with my 00 broke, so what to do, wait years to get a replacement? Buy another PG just for a base? Or get a clear one which Bandai doesn’t even offer. read more

Building a MG Unicorn without Instructions

I’ve got quite a few Master Grade Unicorn Gundams in my collection. By last count I’m at 12 including the Banshee variants. When I picked up the last three for a bit of a project I was challenged on Reddit to build one without the manual. It wasn’t the first time someone threw that task out there so I thought I’d give it a go.

Preparation was easy, take all the of the runners with applicable parts and cut & trim all the pieces. I didn’t do any of the weapons because I haven’t decided whether I’m going to use them or trade them out quite yet. I’ve already got more Beam Magnum rounds than I know what to do with. I made things a bit more difficult for myself by including both the Ver. Ka and OVA parts in the mix. read more

MG Full Armor Unicorn Gundam – Gunpla World Expo Clear Edition

My god, it’s even more beautiful than I had imagined.

As some of you know, I’m somewhat of a Gundam Unicorn gunpla errr… what’s the right word… Collector? Connoisseur? Freak? I’ve got a total of nine Master Grade Unicorns in my possession, not to mention other MGs from the series. So when I saw on GundamGuy that there would be a limited edition clear Full Armor Unicorn for sale, at the Gunpla World Expo, I had to have one. Unable to make a trip to Japan I picked up one, err two, from Gentei Kits who specializes in Bandai’s generally Japan exclusive releases. read more

MG Sinanju Stein – Finished

After a long and frustrating process my MG Sinanju Stein is finally complete.

My Stein gave me a lot of grief, which was duly returned over the course of this build. I had initially intended for this kit to receive a paint job that, accidentally, matched the Hi-Nu colour scheme. I wanted to keep things simple but couldn’t decide on what colour to run with until I saw nrvblanco’s PG 00 Raiser WIP over on the Gundam Australia Forums. He mixed silver with blue to create a great looking colour which I tried to replicate. From there I add a bit of gray and the next thing I knew after plotting all the colours on Fury S12’s Stein designer I realized I had a MG Hi-Nu scheme going. read more

MG Banshee ver. Titans – Complete

[flickr-photo:id=8017675862,size=n]

Ah, here it is. My latest Gundam Unicorn creation, a Banshee more specifically, themed in the lovable Titan’s colour scheme. Blue and gold has always been one of my favorite schemes, well before I saw Zeta Gundam ages ago. To see this kit come together and look pretty damn amazing, with the yellow details here and there, is a long time coming. The project was envisioned months ago before I convinced PatrickGrade (of GundamGuy fame) to part with his Banshee. read more

MG Banshee ver. Titans – WIP 2

Time to share some more WIP shots of my latest MG Unicorn project, more specifically, a MG Banshee painted in Titans colours. For the most part things have been going well and a majority of the kit has been painted. That’s saying a lot since I counted 5 pieces in the entire thing that aren’t getting one colour or another. Good news aside, I have had some major problems with my top coat though.

For whatever reason, I think because I laid to heavy of a coat, Testors’ Dull Cote actually managed to make many of the pieces more lustrous. Frustrating on it’s own, horrible when in contact with the decals. This issue doesn’t seem to have occurred on the decals themselves, just the paint. Thus the decals are duller than the pieces around them and their lines show up really easy with the right lighting. It’s almost like reverse silvering. read more

MG Banshee ver. Titans – WIP Start

After a bit of a Gunpla break I’ve returned to get started on my next MG Unicorn, this time a MG Banshee, painted in a Titans colour scheme. Instead of black for the torso and feet I’m going to go a navy blue then use a lighter blue on the rest of the kit. The frame, where I originally planned to use yellow, is going to silver. Yellow details will go here and there, as with the Titans theme, and red where appropriate. This guy is also going to have two claws, with the angry claw bits painted a metalic red (like it’s heating up). Here’s the current mockup… read more
