MG Sazabi ver. Ka – Completed Build

I’m please to present my latest build, the MG Sazabi ver. Ka. It hasn’t been without issue, I’ve definitely run into some complications here and there which I’ll get into later. For the most part things came together pretty well. There are a few things I wish I could go back and redo (would likely require buying another kit) to get 100% right. Oh well, what good is a build there aren’t lessons learned? The build took around two months from start to finish and boy did time fly. Lots of painting, lots of top coating, lots and lots of pieces. For the most part it was smooth sailing thanks to a methodical paint process. read more

Sazabi ver. Ka – Almost Complete

I haven’t said much about this project on OR but I figure the day before it’s finally complete is a good a time as any to post some work-in-progess shots. Painting wise, everything is complete. Decals are on (surprisingly without major incident) and the top coat is on. I’m just making a few small detail tweaks where and there as I assemble the kit for the last time.

Take a look at some of the pieces as they’re starting to come together…

Batman #28: The Bluebird of Harper-ness (CONTAINS AT LEAST ONE SPOILER)

Oh, Bruce. You say that to all your future meat shields… I mean, partners.

Ever since DC Comics (isn’t "DC Comics" "Detective Comics Comics"?) decided to initiate a poorly-planned mess of a reboot in 2011, creating the universe of the "New 52" (or Prime Earth), which combined the already existing DC universe with that of Vertigo and Wildstorm (only to largely dispose of those elements later), it hasn’t been easy to find solid, compelling DC titles that wouldn’t vary in quality from week to week. After all, they didn’t just restart the timeline, they skull fucked continuity with a diamond dick and blew their load through the back of its head. The Teen Titans’ history? Gone. Superman? He wears a t-shirt and jeans and then switches to battle armor, all the while romancing Wonder Woman (he’s no longer married and was in fact never romantically involved with Lois Lane). Also, he’s kind of a jerk now. Wally West who? Cassandra Cain who? Donny Troy who? Also, the Amazons rape men and throw out the male babies (sort of a reverse China). Amanda Waller is thin and attractive, somebody thought Cyborg would make a good Justice League member, Billy Batson is a little prick, the Justice Society lives in a parallel world again, Roy Harper wears a trucker hat, and nobody’s quite sure what happened and what didn’t happen in the past, which has been relegated to a six year time frame. read more

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods Review

 "Battle of Gods"

Spoiler-Free Synopsis: After a thirty-nine year sleep, Beerus, the God of Destruction, has awoken, and is seeking the "Super Saiyan God" he saw in his dream. He and his attendant Whis sense the remaining Saiyans, first questioning Son Goku as he trains on Kaio’s planet. Goku is soundly beaten in battle with Beerus, even at Super Saiyan 3 level, and the God of Destruction goes to Earth to inquire of Vegeta. On Earth, Bulma’s birthday party is interrupted by Beerus, Whis, and the Pilaf gang (who are looking to make money). Beerus is accomodated by Vegeta, but soon loses his temper when denied pudding from Buu, and a battle breaks out. When Goku himself is no match for the God of Destruction, what chance do the others have? Beerus demands the Super Saiyan God to appear or he’ll destroy the planet Earth! read more

The Best of 2013

(Note: This post is spoiler-free)

2013 was my first year watching anime simulcasts, and I really dove in with both feet. I watched upwards of 40 shows this year (including retroactively watching a few of the carryovers from Fall 2012), and had a blast experiencing the new shows as they aired and discussing them with fellow fans. Watching a show as it airs certainly has a different dynamic than marathoning one from several years ago, both in the fact that the discussion it is more current and ongoing, and in the fact that the surprises held in store (especially with regards to original shows) are still unknown. Having watched shows like Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica retroactively, I was aware of the tonal turn the show took (even though I didn’t know exactly what would happen). Other shows that I watched retroactively, such as the 2012 carryover Zetsuen no Tempest, were spoiled for me entirely (by accident), which definitely took some of the edge off the surprise (and boy does Tempest have a couple of big surprises in store). read more

Gunpla Display Cabinet 2 – Cabinet Harder

Over a year ago I set about putting my Gunpla models into a display case of their own. The intent was to not only display them properly but help protect them from the ever present threat of dust. This was the result. It was initially evident that I didn’t have enough room for everything but lacking floorspace there wasn’t much I could do about it. Since then I’ve been lucky enough to upscale my living conditions, and from that, my Gunpla display situation. Though, I’m not sure I have enough space now either. read more

Three reasons why Kill la Kill isn’t living up to its potential

We’re 12 episodes into the latest series from Studio Trigger and ex-Gainax icon Hiroyuki Imaishi, Kill la Kill. While this ride started off wild and exciting it has slowly wondered into a by-the-numbers snooze fest. You know it’s bad when the latest Valvrave episode is more anticipated. Kill la Kill has quite a lot going for it though, and with a bit of fine tuning, it could still develop into something great. While it may not surpass Imaishi’s directorial debut, Gurren Lagann, it can at least save itself a mere flicker in the annals of anime history. To get there, though, a few things need to be cleaned up which are holding the series back. read more

Testing out Amazon Web Services

For some odd reason I’m always tweaking the site in December. Last year it as all kinds of much needed upgrades and special features. This year it’s something a lot more dangerous, a move to Amazon Web Services!

Well, it’s not really that dangerous, since the original instance of this site is still running on the old server. But this extended test on AWS is fraught with a bit of danger since I haven’t a clue what the sort of resources the site needs to run on a daily basis. The site is currently sitting in the lowest tier, simply due to cost. Hopefully this will be enough because the next higher will seriously overstep the ad revenue. read more
