A Trip Down Memory Lane, Part 1

This past weekend I had the fortune of visiting my folks back home for the 4th of July weekend. While home I decided to dig out two of my toy chests, giant plastic bins, with a hodgepodge of toys from every point in my life. My main intent was to photograph some of the more memorable items. Perhaps these toys are pretty kick ass, perhaps my nostalgia glasses are on full blast, but either way it was good to see some of them again.

Some Thoughts On: Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance

The second Neon Genesis Evangelion film, Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance, has hit the shelves over in Japan. While we await a BluRay release here in the States here are our preliminary thoughts of the film.

I’m a pretty big Evangelion fan, and I watch the TV series once every year. When the first Rebuild movie came out, I was immediately interested, even though I knew it would be mostly a rehash of the first few episodes. I foolishly bought the 1.01 DVD instead of holding out for the 1.11 Blu-Ray. Still, I enjoyed the first movie, and how it smoothed some of the narrative out from the TV series. read more

The Nerv of Some People!

Just a little rant:

Folks, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a great show. Is it the best show ever? No. Is it the best show of its kind? Not even. Is it one of the best? Maybe. Is it perfect? No. Fuck, though, if it isn’t extremely well directed most of the time, with all sorts of amazing scene composition, human behavior study, and great mecha action set to beautiful music. It’s still my favorite Gainax production, next to Wings of the Honneamise and Ebichu Minds The House.
