Falldog’s Space Battleship Yamato Model Collection

For the longest time I’ve wanted a 1/350 scale Space Battleship Yamato from Bandai. For those who hadn’t heard of it before, think Perfect Grade quality gimmicks to the max of 2007 model technology – lights, sounds, and best of all, motorized turrets. I remember seeing one in a local hobby shop many years ago, back before Bluefin became the de facto US distributor for Bandai, and on sale for what must have been a crazy cheap price. These days they regularly go for over $700 – which is a key reason I never got one. read more

Otaku Evolution Episode 109 – Space Cruiser Yamato (Movie)

The first English-language bastardization of Space Battleship Yamato, Space Cruiser Yamato, a recut version of the compilation version of the first TV series, is quite a ride. A ride into mediocrity, with its truncated, if not entirely decimated character development and simplistic plot summarizing. And you know how I hate people who just boil down long works into a neat package, as if to comment on them with faux-wry humor for an audience of captive idiots too lazy to watch a whole TV series.

I mean, I just hate that. Hate it. read more

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 PV

A few notes:

– Captain Okita’s character design seems to be the least redesigned.

– Doctor Sado looks like a compromise between his original design and the new style.

– Awesome, some of Hiroshi Miyagawa’s music is making it in, probably because his son is doing the music.

– Gamilian spaceships! If only they would show Gamilius and/or Lord Desslar.

– Starsha confirmed!

I’m so psyched about this. As I’ve established, SBY is one of my favorite anime, and this PV makes the remake look pretty damn good! read more

ANIME TOP TEN (LIST #1) – #10: Space Battleship Yamato (1974)

Director(s): Leiji Matsumoto, Noboru Ichiguro
Screenplay: Eiichi Yamamoto, Keisuke Fujikawa, Maru Tamura
Music: Hiroshi Miyagawa

The brainchild of producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto, Space Battleship Yamato is considered a classic, and with good reason. It’s groundbreaking in the way it sells its themes and characters and fleshes out its concepts. The story of a humanity on the brink of extinction, driven to desperate measures when a sudden hope appears, hunted by a deranged enemy that is perhaps no so unlike us, the spaceship Yamato cruises the sea of the stars in search of a cure to a diseased future. The point of view is mostly through the combat team leader Susumu Kodai (Kei Tomiyama), a brash youth whose family has died, who has little else but his own skills as a pilot. But he’s far from the only character: the fatherly captain, Okita (Goro Naya), the cooler headed pilot Daisuke Shima (Shuusei Nakamura), the bionic scientist Shiro Sanada (Takeshi Aono), and Kodai’s love interest Yuki Mori (Yoko Asagimi), the crew’s seemingly sole female, also compliment the story. A story of triumph and tragedy, perserverance and humanity, Yamato soars above other works of science fiction with grace and nobility.

Otaku Revolution’s Top 15 Anime Soundtracks: Honorable Mentions

Introduction | 15-11 | 10-6 | 5-2 | 1 | Honorable Mentions

So, while indulging in a Mexican standoff (or was it Mexican takeout?) to decide who makes the cut here, the geeks who assembled this list may have had to leave out some soundtracks that, while good, could not be agreed upon to be “the best”. Well, fine, I say. The Philistines who don’t want to see those great works glorified can go die in twelve fires. However, they will not go without mention! No, sir, these soundtracks will get their moment in the sun (actually, I can’t recall what the sun looks like… I need to get out more)! read more
